We have some very exciting news to announce from Rocking the Daisies head quarters. The first winners of the inaugural Climate Change Leadership Awards were announced at a function at the Sandton Sun on Thursday, 11 March 2010. We are very excited to report that out of seven finalists, Rocking the Daisies Music Festival received the award for the Small and Medium Business Sector.

The Climate Change Leadership Awards recognize, reward and celebrate South African businesses, community-based organisations or individuals who are leaders in climate change issues, and who are taking the lead through positive voluntary action by implementing a range of activities related to combating global warming. We are incredibly honoured to be included in these awards as it is an affirmation of all of our hard work and the hard work of everyone involved who have been grafting with us day and night to produce a festival that can simultaneously entertain and change peoples perceptions. We would especially love to say a huge thank you to Hemporium and Tony Budden for being a part of this process right from the beginning and offering green guidance and advice every step of the way. Together we have created an experience that we can be very proud of. Thank you so much for all of your dedication and support in sharing our goals, we are so proud to share this award with all of our partners who worked so hard to promote our green efforts!

Take a look at all the exciting objectives we were able to accomplish last year, from our carbon neutral footprint to our transport initiatives all the way to our recycling plans and biodegradable materials used.

- To offset the carbon footprint of the festival, 250 trees were planted in the developing community of Koringberg, in the Swartland District. This community was most in need of greening and upliftment initiatives.

- 20 tons (150 cubic meters) of waste was collected. Of that, 19.32 tons was recycled.
This included 9 tons of tin, 1.2 tons of PET (plastic bottles and the like), 420 kg cardboard and 8.7 tons of glass.

- A conscious cinema screened films and documentaries covering environmental and social issues. This cinema and the Hemporium stall were powered using wind and solar power and all lighting showcased the latest in LED technology.

- Green power in the form of bio-diesel generators powered most of the festival, the bio-diesel was produced prior to the festival from used vegetable oil collected from participating festival restaurants

- 100% biodegradable soaps and shampoos were supplied to all festival goers in the showers and biodegradable detergents were supplied to all festival restaurants. Participating restaurants also used 100% biodegradable food packaging.

- All Festival merchandise was produced from environmentally friendly hemp fabric and all tickets were printed on 100% hemp paper.

- The festival magazine was printed on Sappi Triple Green paper and all posters and flyers were printed on fully recycled paper.

- The venue, Cloof Wine Estate, is a biodiversity champion, contributing to the re-growth of indigenous fauna and flora unique to that area.

- 39 cyclists participated in an official carbon neutral cycle trip, which gave them a 50% discount on the ticket and raised awareness about green transport as well as contributing to reducing the festivals carbon footprint.

- 2 festival goers literally walked the distance and walked to Rocking the Daisies, further creating awareness of the natural flora up the West Coast and reducing carbon footprints.

- Overall, as the organisers, the biggest achievement was the awareness created through all of these initiatives combined and what lasting positive long-term effects we have created.

The aim was to communicate the’green’ values of the Rocking The Daisies Music Festival. Through this, Levi’s® Original Music created a platform for these artists to demonstrate their conscience through their work and allowed them to market themselves to all festival goers through the widely successful exhibition at the festival.

Their artwork was later exhibited and sold through Hemporium’s flagship store.
